Military Hometown Hero Banner Program
The Military Hometown Heroes of Prairie Township Banner Program is a living tribute created for the community to recognize and honor Prairie Township residents and graduates of Westland High School who are serving, or are veterans who have served our country in the United States Armed Forces. Each banner will be in honor of a specific Prairie Township service person and will include their name, branch of service and photo (if provided). Each banner will be displayed on a street lamp on West Broad St., from Memorial Day through Veterans Day to both celebrate and remind the community of their dedication to our country.
Purpose and Description of Program
This program was created to pay tribute to the brave men and women of Prairie Township and Westland High School who are serving, have served, or have given their life to our country in the United States Armed Forces.
The Hometown Heroes banners will be displayed on West Broad St. in Prairie Township. (All banner locations shall be determined solely by Prairie Township).
About The Banners
Banners measure approximately 60 inches by 24 inches with 3 inch pockets on top and bottom and will have the Service Person’s name, image, military branch and rank. Banner types are:
Active Duty- designated with a Blue Star.
Veteran - Honorably discharged will be designated with a White Star.
Memorial - Those who have died in the line of duty will be designated with a Gold Star.
Eligibility
The individual to be recognized must reside or have resided in Prairie Township or Graduated from Westland High School. Individuals must have served in any of the following branches of the US Armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard and/or Coast Guard) and must also meet one of the following conditions:
- Currently be active service member
- Be an honorably discharged veteran
- Died in the line of duty
Cost
Prairie Township covers the cost of production, installation, and removal of the banner.
Banner Display
The banner will be displayed before Memorial Day and will be up through Veterans Day.

To order a banner, simply download the Application Form (PDF) and the Release Statement (PDF). Return your completed forms along with the requested information and your payment to:

Selection Process:
Applications must be received by April 1, 2023.
Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first– served basis.
Banners will be installed annually from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. The applicant will be notified of when the banner will be install honoring the military service person or veteran.
*Prairie Township is not responsible for replacing banners that are stolen, damaged, or destroyed due to age, vandalism, or any acts of nature including high winds. Any loss or damage to an installed banner will be handled at the discretion of the Township.
